Many of us are setting goals wrong, and most of us are not setting goals at all. Throughout my life, I was obsessed with planning and goal setting. I read so many books and tested so many frameworks on how to set goals the right way. And guess what? After all that research, I finally have a simple system that will make you achieve any goal, no matter how big it is.

Stick with me as I’m going to first show you how to figure out what you want, and then share with you 3 key steps to set your goals and actually achieve them. And finally, I’ll share with you the system I use to set goals.

So, let’s dive in!

How to Actually Figure Out What You Want?

Alright, let’s start with the basics.

First things first, you need to get clear on what you actually want. Sounds obvious, right? But you’d be surprised how many people skip this step. Many people struggle with identifying their true desires and end up setting goals based on what they think they should want, rather than what they genuinely care about.

First, take some time for self-reflection. Reflect on your passions, interests, and what excites you. Think about where you want to be in the next few years, and consider what makes you happy and fulfilled. Ask yourself questions like:

  • What activities make me lose track of time?

  • When do I feel the most alive and engaged?

  • What are the accomplishments I’m most proud of?

Next, consider your values. What is most important to you in life? Is it family, career, health, adventure, or something else? Your goals should align with your core values, as this alignment will keep you motivated and committed.

Another useful technique is to visualize your ideal life. Imagine where you want to be in 5, 10, or even 20 years. What does your perfect day look like? Where are you living, what are you doing, and who are you with? Visualization can help clarify what you truly desire.

Finally, don’t be afraid to dream big. Allow yourself to think about those 'crazy' dreams that you’ve tucked away. Often, these are the goals that truly ignite our passion and drive.

3 Key Steps to Set Your Goals the Right Way

Now that you have a clearer idea of what you want, let's talk strategy.

Setting goals isn't just about wishful thinking – it's about having a game plan that'll get you from point A to point B without getting lost along the way.

Step 1: Break It Down

Big goals can be overwhelming and seem impossible to achieve. The trick is to break them down into smaller, more manageable tasks. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, start with running a mile, then gradually increase your distance. Each small step will bring you closer to your ultimate goal and make the process less daunting.

Step 2: Make a Plan

Once you’ve broken down your goal into smaller tasks, it’s time to create a plan. Write down what you need to do daily, weekly, or monthly to stay on track. For instance, if you want to write a book, your plan could include writing a certain number of words each day or dedicating specific hours to writing each week.

Step 3: Track Your Goals and Reflect

Tracking your goals is crucial for staying accountable and monitoring your progress. Keep a journal or use an app to record your daily activities and milestones. This will help you see how far you’ve come and identify any areas where you need to adjust your strategy.

Reflection is equally important. Set aside time regularly to review your goals and assess your progress. Ask yourself questions like:

  • What went well this week?

  • What challenges did I face?

  • What can I do differently next time?

  • Am I still aligned with my values and priorities?

Reflecting on your journey allows you to celebrate your successes, learn from your failures, and make necessary adjustments to stay on course. It’s a continuous process of growth and self-improvement.

And there you have it! A straightforward system to help you achieve any goal. Remember, the key steps are to know what you want, break it down into manageable tasks, make a detailed plan, track your progress, and reflect on your journey.

How I Set Goals Using This System?

Now, let me take you behind the scenes and show you how I keep my goals in check using my trusty Goal Setting Notion hub.

Notion is a fantastic tool for organizing your life and staying on top of your goals. I've customized my Notion workspace to include sections for yearly goals, quarterly goals, monthly goals, and weekly goals, along with spaces for reflections at each interval.

Hi, I'm Fadma. I help you facilitate your self growth journey by providing different resources and tools that will elevate and transform your life.

Yearly Goals

At the beginning of each year, I sit down and outline my goals for the next 12 months for each area of my life (financial, career, health, spiritual). These are the big-picture goals or aspirations that I want to accomplish by the end of the year. Whether it’s personal growth, career advancement, or health and wellness, I make sure my yearly goals align with my long-term vision.

Quarterly Goals

To break down my yearly goals into more manageable chunks, I set quarterly goals. These are specific goals that I aim to achieve within a three-month period. By dividing the year into quarters, I can stay focused and make progress toward my larger goals without feeling overwhelmed.

Monthly Goals

Next, I zoom in even further and set monthly goals. These are actionable sub-goals that contribute to my quarterly goals. I use the start of each month to reassess my priorities and adjust my goals accordingly. This allows me to stay flexible and responsive to changing circumstances.

Weekly Goals

Finally, I break down my monthly goals into weekly tasks. Every Sunday, I plan out my week ahead and identify the key actions I need to take to move closer to my bigger goals.

Reflectons

Goal setting isn’t just about looking forward; it’s also about looking back and learning from your experiences. That’s why I include spaces for reflections at each interval – yearly, quarterly, monthly, and weekly. These reflection sessions allow me to celebrate my wins, acknowledge my challenges, and identify areas for improvement. I've created templates for each reflection session to guide my thinking and make the process more structured.

You can check this video, where you can see an overview of the template to get an idea. I highly recommend checking it out.

By following this structured approach, you can maintain clarity and direction in all areas of your life. This template not only helps you set and track your goals but also encourages continuous reflection and growth, allowing you to reinvent yourself and adapt to new challenges and opportunities.

And guess what? You can have access to this Notion planner template for free! You can customize it to fit your own goals and preferences, and start organizing your life with intention and purpose.
